Honey, If It Didn't Suck, It Wouldn't Be Law School

That's what Mr. D said to me on the way home yesterday after receiving bad grade news. Todays news was even worse. After working harder, doing more practice tests, reading outlines countless times, I have consistently done worse this semester than last.

Now I know why 2L's quit caring. The work put in isn't sure to pay off. Why try? The class I skipped the most I've done the best in so far, except for LRW. I quit reading cases within the first month, did few practice tests and only read the E&E once.

I'm left shaking my head, defeated, and ashamed.

2L's only say they quit caring. Actually, that's not true, I totally quit caring until about two weeks before finals, then I started caring again. But yes, it's one of the paradoxes of law school that the less you do, the better your grades are. Example: the one class that I read gossip sites in instead of paying attention was my best grade, while the one that I actually paid attention to was my worst grade. Go figure.

Sounds like a real crapshoot. I'm sorry to hear you got such bad news. :( I'd like to think there's a winning strategy out there.

OMG Loco, it is SO NOT YOUR FAULT. My second semester I busted my butt and knew everything backwards and forwards. I thought I was going to rock because I was ten times more prepared. My spring gpa was almost a quarter of a point lower than first semester. I will say this - fall of my 2L year, I didn't really care until about a month out - and it was my best semester. Maybe the secret is being chill. Hang in there. It's not you. It's a crapshoot.

Agree with above commenters. I will say that the "shaking head, defeated and ashamed" will turn into "shaking head, shrugging shoulders and not giving a shit anymore" at some point.

Two reasons for the increased competition: (1) The school weeded out the weak students from the Fall and thus moving the curve up. Notice how your Spring class size is smaller than the Fall. (2) Everyone is smarting from the first semester experience.

Congrats on surving the first year.
