First of all, thank you everyone for your warm words of support. I need it. I'm still smarting. Ouch.
When did you take Pro Res and the MPRE? Is there a preferred time? Do I have to take a prep class? Is it best to take Pro Res in the spring, then take the MPRE in August? A friend of mine is thinking about taking it this fall and taking the MPRE in March.
Right now the thought of taking another test I won't do well on in the middle of the semester feels really painful.
What are your wise thoughts on this?

I took PR the second semester of 2L and then the MPRE in Nov of my 3L year. A few of my friends waited till March of 3L year. Generally accepted wisdom has people taking it sometime during 3L, and not during 2L at all.
I took PR the summer after 1st year, and the MPRE in March of 3L. I would recommend taking PR closer to when you take the MPRE, but 3L is plenty early to take the MPRE itself. The Bar-Bri review for the MPRE was pretty helpful, but it had been a while since I had taken PR, so I needed the refresher. (It's free if you have already signed up for the regular BarBri).
Ooops, I mean November of 3L year for the MPRE. Lots of my friends took in in March, and some still haven't taken it and will take it in August (after graduation)
I had several friends take PR in their 2L spring and the MPRE in March (or whenever). For us, it was the Friday before spring break. Why is that of interest? Because at least two people I know flunked the first time around. Not sure if it's connected or not.
I took PR the fall of my 3L and the MPRE in November. That way, if I failed, I could take it again in the spring. Then again, I had a flight to Boston two hours after the MPRE, so I was bubbling like crazy and then out the door. Luckily, I passed.
In sum, my "advice" is not to have something way cool and fun to do scheduled right after the MPRE.
I took pro. res. 1st semester of 3L and took MPRE the second semester (March). I spent 4 days in drinking in LA, studied for 2 days when I got back, then took the test and did fine. I recommend the BarBri book they give you. GREAT outline!
I took PR last semester (spring of my 2L) and am registered to take the MPRE this August. I'm not taking a prep class, but I do have the day before off work to study.
